Introduction

The city is a fact in nature, like a cave, a run of mackerel or an ant-heap. But it is also a conscious work of art, and it holds within its communal framework many simpler and more personal forms of art. Mind takes form in the city; and in turn, urban forms condition mind.” - Lewis Mumford

What is urban? Does it comprise a single definition? Is it a single place? A single entity? What are its dimensions? Its qualities? Its components?...

There are many questions surrounding the term 'urban', what it means to be urban and to live in an urban world. It is my hope to show just some of the aspects that make up the entity that we call 'urban': the people, the places, the emotions, the styles, the hopes and dreams, the realities and fantasies that make up our urban lives...

This blog is part of an assignment for my GEOG 2007: Urban Geography course. As part of the course work percentage, we are asked to do a blog on a topic of our choosing based on Urban Geography. The blog must comprise an original photograph, an explanation as to why we took this photograph, how it relates to our theme, some supporting academic evidence from our textbook Urban Geography by Hall and Barrett, or other sources, and lastly some relation to pop culture, or the media...thanks for reading, supporting and commenting! I hope this journey is as enjoyable to you as it will be for me.
